Taipei institute gains status as university
Vice President Vincent Siew, Minister of Education Wu Ching-ji, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-pin, and many other dignitaries attended the ceremony to unveil the new name of the University over its entrance.
Dr. Cheng Fen-shih, President of the Board of the University, pointed out that the school's goal is to equip each student with one diploma, two languages, three national awards, and four license certificates in their four years of education.
Dr. Lien Hsin-chung, President of the University, indicated that the University requires a balanced education program among the sciences, technology, and general education. In addition, the university emphasizes cultivating students with the five traditional goals of education: virtue, knowledge, physical education, cooperation with the others, and the appreciation of natural beauty and art.
Dr. Wang Ling-ming, Director of the Applied Foreign Language Department, said that her department will fully support President Ma Ying-jeou's policy goals of enabling 40,000 Taiwan young people to take overseas trips and study abroad, while attracting 100,000 foreign youngsters and students to visit and study in Taiwan. Director Wang will strengthen the international exchange program to encourage Applied Foreign Language Department students to go to U.S., Europe, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand for overseas study.
Vice President Siew has a long-standing relationship with Taipei City University of Science and Technology. He has been a regular speaker in the “Hsiao Wan-chang Lectures Forum,” which has invited scholars and experts from all fields to the university to give lectures to the students. He said that he is very happy to see that this school is continuing to elevate its status.
Minister of Education Wu Ching-ji celebrated the school's achievements in the past three years where the students have won 23 gold medals, and many silver and bronze medals in international competitions of creativity in science and technology. Those competitions were held in Germany, Switzerland, and Korea. “This is a proof that the University is really a truly great educational institution,” the Minister said.
Mayor Hou stated that in the 41-year history of this school, it has contributed to the Taipei and Kuan Tu community on every score. It is an honor for Taipei to have such an outstanding school like Taipei City University of Science and Technology.
Chung Chien-chung, Director of the Student Curriculum, said the school has established many clubs for the students. Some are for learning a particular skill, some are to study Taiwanese folk cultures, some are in the sports field, and some are in the science and technology area.
There are three colleges in the Taipei City University of Science and Technology: the College of People's Livelihood, College of Business Management, and College of Engineering. In addition, there are the Graduate School of Mechanics and Electrical Engineering and the Graduate School of Electronics and Business.
